Dutch Hawaiian is a unique sativa strain that many patients may not have heard of, in contrast to some of the other established strains, such as Sour Diesel and Jack Herer.
My first experience with this strain was when Trulieve released it in their flower vape cups (review here) in late January 2019; before that, I had never even heard the strain mentioned.
Both my experiences with Dutch Hawaiian have been enjoyable. This is a more balanced sativa strain that may be a good choice for patients who don’t like the speedy qualities of other sativas.
Dutch Hawaiian (Sativa)
Price at time of review: $53/eighth
Batch/Harvest Number: DUFLBLDS3PK5
Total Cannabinoids: 21.8%
“*” denotes the two dominant terpenes in this strain
Total Terpenes: 1.7638%
This batch of Dutch Hawaiian is a darker shade of green than the batch I got from the vape cups earlier this year. With this medium green color, it looks similar to other sativas available at Trulieve.
Trulieve’s flower cures have been consistently better throughout the course of 2019. However, the trimming in some of the more recent batches could be slightly improved, and this batch of Dutch Hawaiian was another example of that with its numerous sugar leaves left behind.
Other than that, the cure is better than the last batch I sampled, which was a bit on the dry side. The moisture content in this eighth is nearly perfect.
Appearance/Cure Rating: 8.00/10.00
Dutch Hawaiian is one of the most unique smelling sativa strains that I have tried. It reminds me a bit of White Buffalo with its floral and “fresh” notes – possibly attributed to the linalool seen in the terpenes above.
This is not a particularly pungent strain, but it is evident that there is a plentiful variety of different terpenes present when smelling the jar.
I also detect a hint of a “cookies” type smell in Dutch Hawaiian, with a very subtle sweet citrus lurking underneath the surface.
When vaped, the citrus terpenes seem to be more pronounced, equally blending in with the rest of the terpene profile to produce a pleasant tasting vapor or smoke.
Smell/Taste Rating: 8.00/10.00
If you’re looking for a more mellow/balanced sativa that leans more to the “hybrid” end of the spectrum, I recommend Dutch Hawaiian. It still has the characteristic cerebral energy of a sativa strain, but with the added benefit of full body relaxation that becomes apparent fairly soon after the initial inhalation.
Other patients have commented that they find this to be a good strain for alleviating social anxiety. I’m inclined to agree with that assessment, as the relaxing and euphoric effects help round out the motivating and energetic feelings. I never got a “couch lock” with this strain, but it is definitely one of the more relaxing sativa strains that I have tried. Could almost pass for a hybrid strain in term of the effects.
Possibly good for treating:
- Depression and related anxiety
- Social anxiety/agoraphobia
- ADD/ADHD or focus-related issues
- Good for treating lack of motivation
- Minor aches and pains
- Minor nausea/gastrointestinal issues
I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Every body is different, and every body reacts different to various medications.
Effects Rating: 8.60/10.00
Overall Rating: 8.20/10.00
Overall, I would best describe Dutch Hawaiian as another “excellent” sativa strain from Trulieve.
This is an enjoyable strain that I absolutely would recommend to patients who benefit from sativa strains, or sativa connoisseurs in general. The effects are nice, but I don’t necessarily feel this is a “top shelf” $53 strain; I feel that this would be a better candidate for the $43 tier. Perhaps as time progresses and the vertical integration laws soften or die altogether, this will be possible.
I definitely recommend trying this at least once, especially if you can catch a discount or sale. It’s a really good strain, all in all.
