Trulieve TruWax Review: LA Confidential (Indica)

Trulieve surprised many of us today (04.23.2020) with the release of a new concentrate product: TruWax. Their site offers the following description:

Trulieve TruWax is a handcrafted concentrate, developed using a cold ethanol extraction and a careful hand-whipping technique over low heat. The result is an aromatic, clay-like full-spectrum concentrate that retains the flavor, cannabinoids, terpenes, and resulting effects from the strain it was derived from.

Appearance/Quality

Trulieve offers the following statement about the consistency of TruWax:

TruWax is clay-like in texture, ranging from drier to wetter depending on the strain type. Unlike the hardened and drier textures of Shatter and TruCRMBL, the texture will be soft and malleable. “

This turned out to be exactly the case with this batch. The texture is almost exactly like clay and very easy to work with, especially if you have a dab tool (as you should!)

Trulieve states that optimal storage is between 42 and 60 degrees fahrenheit, so I keep mine in the refrigerator, as recommended. This makes TruWax the easiest concentrate to work with, in my opinion. It doesn’t make a mess, like distillate does. It doesn’t go flying across the room, like shatter can do when broken. It is most similar to a cross between crumble and “sugared” rosin.

Being that the texture is extremely easy to work with, and is as exactly as advertise, this product gets a near-max rating in this category.

Appearance/Quality Rating: 9.40/10.00

Smell/Taste

This LA Confidential TruWax does a great job of capturing the “essence” of the flower form of the strain. LA Confidential flower is very rich, pungent, hashy, and sweet all at once.

The “nose” of this concentrate when first opening the jar is about the same as the potency of the smell of TruCRMBL. I found the Trulieve/Blue River rosin to be more pungent as raw material, but that’s to be expected – lab results showed my Skywalker Rosin had over 8% terpenes, about twice as many as this TruWax has.

The taste, however, is a different story. I’m not sure exactly how it’s possible with roughly half the terpene content, but TruWax has just as much – if not more – flavor than the rosin I’ve tried. Everything I love about the smell and taste of LA Confidential flower comes through in a powerful, flavorful, concentrated vapor that truly surprised me on my first few times trying it.

If you’re the type of patients who really enjoys the taste of cannabis, and looks for that in your medicating experience, I highly recommend this product. It’s easily more flavorful than distillate, shatter, snow, or crumble; it’s in the same league as rosin, and maybe slightly better depending on the strain.

The hype is real. The taste of this LA Confidential TruWax is superb.

Smell/Taste Rating: 9.50/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

Again, LA Confidential TruWax does a nice job of capturing the effects of the flower form. I have always found this strain to be a more relaxing and functional indica rather than sedating, and that holds true with the wax form as well. It does seem that the effects creep up in intensity more so than being “hit in the face” as normally happens when I smoke flower.

The effects are a good balance of cerebral and body effects, and do a good job of capturing the “full spectrum” nuances of the strain. LA Confidential is a good strain for relaxing after work, playing video games, watching movies, reading, or even enjoying leisurely activities outdoors. I never find this to be a strain that puts to me to sleep, or even couch-locks me. It’s always been a good late-afternoon, early-evening indica that I use when I still want to remain awake, functional, and somewhat alert.

Possibly good for treating

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Minor aches and pains
  • General relaxation
  • Headaches
  • Lack of appetite (mild appetite stimulant)
  • Mild gastrointestinal discomfort (Irritable Bowel Syndrome or other similar conditions)

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Every body is different, and every body reacts different to various medications.

Effects Rating: 8.00/10.00

Overall Rating: 8.96/10.00

Overall, I would best describe this batch of LA Confidential TruWax as an “excellent quality” product from Trulieve.

With the addition of TruWax, Trulieve currently has the most variety of concentrates in Florida, which now includes: distillate, shatter, crumble, RSO, rosin, snow (THCa), and wax. Concentrate lovers should absolutely try out the new TruWax. At $65/gram, I think it’s a wonderful option to have – possibly a good choice for patients who enjoy rosin, but want to save the extra $10. I find TruWax to be just as flavorful and effective as rosin, personally. But as with all things in life, it comes down to personal preference.
